Katha- in Hindi this means story. In a country as ancient as India, stories and folklore are abundant. From mythology, to the great epics, to simple moral stories, these stories have generally been passed down from generation to generation by mouth. Grandparents almost always have a tale up their sleeve that would brighten up the eyes of the curious child. And then came along Amar Chitra Katha. Amar Chitra Katha is one of India’s largest selling comic book series was founded in 1967. It brought out stories of great Indian epics, mythology, history, folklore, and fables in a comic book format.
I grew up in a time when smart phones were not heard of. Television too was limited to a channel or two. The only source of entertainment was to read comics. Many a childhood days was spent reading comics stretched out on my favorite couch at home. I still remember my father getting me these comics every time he used to be back from a long business trip. Over the years I had accumulated a considerable number of titles. And to make it easy to organize and sort them, mom had them bound into thicker volumes.
I still pick them up for my children. Of course the prices have increased from a humble Rs. 7 during my childhood to Rs. 50, but I still read them and enjoy it. The Valmiki Ramayana being my favorite title. Despite the years having slipped away, Amar Chitra Katha takes me back to the ageless time of my childhood years.

As you said, even I love to pick up amar chitra katha comics. I am mostly the first to read it on the way home. I had bought, borrowed and read almost all the ones available at the time when I was in school in the 80s.

I have some very happy memories of tucking into bound volumes of Amar Chitra Katha…..a treasure that I still possess, all through my vacations as a child. Hmm….nostalgia!

AMar Chitra Katha made train journeys special for my children who were only allowed to read them while travelling. This post brings back memories of those happy days

I too was an avid reader of these comics and had a huge collection. Loved the artwork in these comics, still remember a book on Shakuntala and how beautiful she looked in the comic.

I remember reading Asoph’s fables and akbar birbal tales. They were the best days of creativity. Your post made me go a trip down my memory lane. Thank you for bringing in nostalgia.
